We wake up each day, look at ourselves in the mirrors, head out and continue a normal day watching everything pass us by without even giving it much notice. However, have you ever thought how a day in the dark would be? And I mean it, complete darkness where you can see exactly NOTHING!
My friend Nour did that!
There was an event called "A Taste of Darkness" held by the German Jordanian University. The purpose of this event was to witness without your eyes how a day in a blind man's life would be. To raise our awareness on how Blinds go around in this world.
The attendees would be divided into groups and each group is assigned a blind person to lead. The leader should be trusted completely or else you would be bumping into each other. Then, they enter a hall where there is NO LIGHT at all. They are taken to their seats and finally dinner is served.
Hearing the details from my friend, I couldn’t but share a little with you. The blind leader started guiding them through the dinner. "Imagine the plate infront of you as a clock. At 12 there is Rice, at 3 there is yogurt and at 7 there is meat. Drinks are found at 1" I can't but say that this was a very detailed description and I was really impressed by how descriptive they can be. They were served then Sandwiches were they had to use their hands in eating.
Blind people depend so much on their other working senses. In the event, my friend realized how poorly we use our 5 senses separately! Imagine eating something without knowing what it is, and you have to depend completely on the tasting sense! Just like they did in the sandwiches part. They had to depend on the sense of touching and tasting to know what they are eating!
One of the greatest lessons learned from this event was to see how strong some of the blind people are! Amazingly strong. But that doesn’t come easily at all. They have to accept their reality and live through it. It’s the only way they can go on with their lives. ACCEPTANCE! Many wise and inspiring stories can be heard from those people. They truly inspire us of how little they are given yet how amazingly they turned it around.
The event was such a success. I can hear my friend talk about it forever. We usually underestimate the power of attending such events. We take small things for granted. We can see, but we never watch. We can hear, but we never listen. We can smell but never appreciate it. My friend just discovered how ungrateful we are for those little senses.
So we should not only appreciate the great things we have in life, we should give an appreciation for the little things that are taken for granted Such as SIGHT!
"Be grateful for little things. If you have a big thing, be extra grateful!" Sometimes all you need to say is, "THANK YOU!" Be grateful. It could always be worse.

nour i would like if you write ur own experience on it! :) share it with ur own words :):)
ReplyDeleteWOW! i loved the experience ..
ReplyDeletesadly many people dont appreciate our 5 senses unless we lose any of them!
we have to take a look around especially when we have some problems in our life .. we will be thankful for what we have because we will see that other people are living without their hands, eyes, legs or any part of their body but they can live their life happily .. and THEY inspired us!
Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
so we have to find a way to be thankful for our troubles, cuz they can become our blessings :)
thanx Layan and of course Nour for reminding me about this important thing in our life.. to be thankful for our life <3

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, you must be grateful for everything you have even it's simple, since a lot of people don't & can't have what you have.

I love the article,, its amazing,, Yes a blind man can lead us,, we have to stop with the labels blind , deaf , whatever,, The true force is the power of the will ,, those people are talented ,, we should learn from them how we appreciate life gifts and how we use our senses,,There is a reason why those people are among us,,They see the beauty in every thing around them and we have to learn that,, sometimes we dont need eyes to see we need vision and belief. Disability is not what we see in the disabled people disability is inability.
